Aug 22, 2019

IKEA is the world's largest furniture manufacturer, but its furniture products are all designed for the normal population, and the use of disabled friends is not so friendly.

For example, the disabled person is sitting on the sofa of IKEA. Because the sofa is too short, he can't get up.When this problem was discovered, IKEA decided to use 3D printing technology to solve these individual needs.

On March 14, 2019, the Antarctic bear learned from foreign media that IKEA and the non-profit organization Milbat and Access Israel jointly developed ThisAbles, a series of 3D printing accessories for IKEA furniture. After putting a 3D printed leg on the sofa, the disabled friend can finally stand up from the sofa easily. There are still many similar cases, such as the wardrobe, disabled friends can not open. After installing the handle for 3D printing, he can easily open the door.

“IKEA vows to create a better life for as many people as possible. We believe that it is our responsibility to create this initiative and to allow people with disabilities to enjoy a variety of products, furniture and household items,” said Shuji Koblenz, CEO of IKEA, Israel. explain.

There are currently 13 designs to choose from. They include items such as sofa lifts, which make it easier for users to sit and get up; and EasyHandle, a handle that opens the door with the forearm or the entire hand; and a glass bumper, a plastic panel that protects the glass door from wheelchair impact.

All designs are slid over existing IKEA furniture, and all 3D modified installations were demonstrated on Ikea Israel's YouTube page, showing how a small adjustment can make a huge difference for people with disabilities.

“We don't guarantee that we can find a solution that meets every need, but we promise to try it,” the program explained on its website.
