Demystifying The Whole Process Of 3D Printing Jewelry

Due to its technological advantages of rapid prototyping, 3D printing is being widely used in various fields, including the jewelry haute couture industry. Today, 3D printing technology is becoming more and more mature, making the jewelry that has been kept in a high cold posture in the past customized and more grounded. At the same time, 3D printing has also solved a lot of design problems.

Even so, 3D printed jewelry is still too mysterious for most people. Nowadays let's unveil the mystery of jewelry making for everyone.

1.Design jewelry

At the beginning of design, the details of the metal type and color should be considered in order to maximize the true color of diamond. In most cases, guests will provide their own design or similar samples, the production team needs to spend a lot of energy to study the design, outline the jewelry design, and do repeated research and revision.

2.Scanning diamond

Put each beautiful diamond into the scanner and create a 3D virtual model of diamond with  precise 

size, structure and layout. According to the online model of the diamond, the designer can accurately create the ratio of jewelry to metal support, in order to make the final assembly more fit and look more beautiful. During the scanning process, in order to maximize the gloss of the center of the colored diamond, a reflector is usually wrapped in the underlying structure of the jewel, that is, the reflector is placed under the diamond or gemstone, a cup-shaped structure.

3.Create a virtual model

The design team used the latest rhino technology to create virtual models for jewelry. With virtual models, designers can accurately design every aspect of the jewellery, making every department proportionate, thus ensuring that the final product is more attractive. At the same time, designers can get accurate information about jewelry, in addition to beautiful appearance, users are more comfortable to wear. In some cases, the design team will make some modifications to the user based on past experience to ensure that the final product is more comfortable to wear.

4.3D printing model

The modified digital model was sent to a resin 3D printer for printing to obtain a high resolution 3D wax pattern sample of diamond ring. After that, the design team will carefully check the 3D printed diamond ring wax pattern to ensure that it accurately reflects the original design. This is a quality control,because this is the first sample in the manufacturing process, if the wax pattern copy of the diamond ring does not match exactly, the design team will return to the drawing board to create another usable design.

5.Casting model

Once the model is complete, you can start casting the model. The wax pattern is attached to a cast tree to begin the mold making of each piece of jewelry. Of course, each piece of jewelry is created separately and ready for the next process. In fact, the process is a multi-cast casting, each model is a separate part.

A plaster mold is created around the wax tree, which is vacuum treated to remove air bubbles. During the drying process of the model, the inner layer of wax burns, and finally a negative mold jewellery is left, and the molten gold or platinum is poured into the mold for cooling. The final step is to peel the plaster mold from the periphery of gold or platinum and add various jewelry sections to the tree.

6.Group decorations

Cut each part of the jewellery from the casting tree, sort it before assembly, and choose to use different thickness models to grind each piece of jewelry and, if necessary,use a tumbler for screening. Once everything is ready, the parts can be welded together to complete the final assembly.

7. Gemstone

Once the installation is complete and the pre-polished is done, the gemstones can be set. Even if the position of the center gemstone is pre-set at the design stage, it is not suitable for the side stone. In order to maximize the accuracy and precision advantages, the technician responsible for setting the gemstones should drill holes in the side of the ring wall for each position where the edge stones are to be placed under the microscope.

8.Polishing and engraving

When the diamond is placed in a jewellery setting, a more thorough polishing is done. If you want to get a diamond jewelry that is shining enough, it is also required to set the luster of the metal material itself.
